Bent's Old Fort National Historic Site preserves the site of the fort built in 1833 to facilitate trade with local trappers and Plains Indians. This was the only primarily white permanent settlement located along the Santa Fe Trail between Missouri and Mexico, but it was abandoned and mostly destroyed in 1849. Rebuilt in the late 20th century to the original drawings and specifications, the fort has again come to life with living history demonstrations in the summer and guided tours year round. The site is just a few miles east of La Junta, located just off Highway 50.
